Fire, Smoke, & Soot Damage Do's and Don'ts


  • Clean chrome in bathroom and kitchen.
  • Wipe off white appliances so that they will not yellow.
  • Change furnace filter if blower is operating.
  • Empty refrigerator if electricity is off and prop doors open with a paper towel roll or newspaper.
  • Poor antifreeze in toilet bowl, sink, and tub if heat is off in winter.
  • Call plumber to drain heating system if heat is off in winter.
  • Wash plants on both sides of the leaves.
  • Remove pets (especially birds) to clean environments.


  • Wipe or wash walls or ceilings.
  • Use upholstered furniture.
  • Use exposed food items or canned goods subjected to heat.
  • Use TVs, computers, or electrical appliances until they have been cleaned.
  • Send smoked garments to an ordinary dry cleaner.
